About Twilighters Cricket Club:

An over 50’s club based in Launceston that has at times been described as a ‘sporting men’s shed’. The common link between all of us is a love of cricket and most of us did not know each other before joining the club. As a club we aim to be competitive on the field but at the same time our sense of camaraderie and friendship is the foundation.

Age group involved: Over 50s while we have an even spread of players in their 50’s, 60‘s and 70’s.

Region in which games are normally played: Launceston and Northern Tasmania.

Home ground:  Home games are played at a variety of grounds including Ross (Veterans Cricket Tasmania new home base) and Westbury both on excellent turf wickets or occasionally at Whitemore.

Frequency of matches: We play just about every Sunday starting early in October through to mid-March with breaks for Christmas and on some long weekends. 20+ games in most seasons.  Most matches are played in 40 over format with 6 overs max per bowler and 40 runs for batters.

Club Trips / National Championships: Each year we aim for a cricketing trip. For the past 5 years Twilighters have participated in an over 60’s carnival at Echuca where about 26 teams meet and play 4 games in 5 days using some of the best turf grounds available. This has become a very popular end of season trip for our players and many of their partners offering not just great cricket but a huge range of other options.

Each year Veterans Cricket Australia runs National Championships for over 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with each age group being staged in different cities around Australia, usually held around November. Tasmania has normally had 2 or 3 teams entered in each age group and the majority of Twilighters players are regular participants. Based on performances during this event, and other matches, national teams are selected in each age group catering for those that may aspire to the highest levels.

Over the years Twilighters have had several players represent Australia across the age groups.

Practice sessions:  Held at the NTCA ground in Launceston every Wednesday from 9:30 am (even during Winter) using the first class indoor nets. Cost is $2 each session. For many of us training is followed by coffee and lunch at the Launceston Swim Centre. It is always an enjoyable time with some banter, many great shots and never knowing who will bowl “ball of the day”.

Other Functions: General meetings that are preceded by a counter meal, are held as needed on a Wednesday night at a local Launceston hotel. Usually such gatherings take place around six times a year.
